If you search “Cappadocia itinerary,” you’ll find dozens of nearly identical templates — same three tours, same balloon photo, same generic hotel recommendation. We want to offer something different: an itinerary built by a family that has actually lived and worked in Cappadocia since 2001.
We are Kısmet Travel, a family-run travel agency and boutique cave hotel operator (Kısmet Cave House and Kısmet Cave Mansion) based in Göreme. This itinerary blends the iconic Cappadocia experiences with something most visitors never get close to: real local life — vineyards, home cooking, and traditions that exist whether or not a tourist is watching.
This is a guest article from Yusuf, Faruk’s son, of Kısmet Travel and Kısmet Cave House / Kısmet Cave Mansion in Göreme. We’ve stayed with Faruk’s family ourselves and trust them completely. — Jane’s personal note follows the itinerary below.
Here’s how we’d suggest spending 3 nights.
Day 1: Arrival — Choose Your Sunset
After check-in, there’s time to settle in before sunset. Rather than locking everyone into one activity, we let guests choose what fits their pace and the day’s conditions:
- Horseback riding at sunset — a quiet, slow way to see the valleys
- ATV at sunset — for guests who want more adrenaline
- Jeep safari at sunset — comfortable, great for families or those who prefer not to drive themselves
All three end the same way: watching the sun go down over the fairy chimneys, just without the crowds of a daytime tour bus.
Day 2: Sunrise Balloon + Red Tour
This is the day most people come to Cappadocia for. A hot air balloon flight at sunrise, drifting over the valleys as the light comes up — still the single most-photographed experience in the region.
After breakfast and some rest, the Red Tour covers Cappadocia’s most dramatic viewpoints and rock-cut sites — Göreme Open Air Museum, Çavuşin, Devrent (Imagination) Valley, and similar stops, depending on the operator.
Balloon flights depend entirely on weather, so we always build in flexibility here rather than fixed timing.
In the evening, guests who want to stay in can enjoy a home-style local dinner at the hotel instead of going out — genuinely home-cooked Cappadocian dishes, not a hotel buffet.
Day 3: Green Tour, Then a Night of Tradition
The Green Tour takes in the other side of Cappadocia — Ihlara Valley, the underground city, and Selime Monastery — a full day of walking and history.
In the evening, guests choose between two very different cultural experiences:
- A Turkish Night, with regional food, music, and dance
- A Sema (whirling dervish) ceremony, a quiet, spiritual performance rooted in Sufi tradition
Both are authentic, but they suit different moods — we let guests pick based on what they’re in the mood for that evening.
Day 4: The Family Vineyard
This is the part of the itinerary you won’t find in a template.
Before departure, we take guests to a real family vineyard — the kind that’s been growing grapes in this volcanic soil for generations, run by my father, Faruk. It’s not staged for tourists; it’s simply how the family has always lived.
Guests learn about:
- Organic, traditional grape growing in volcanic soil
- The harvest season and how it shapes the local calendar
- Traditional pekmez (grape molasses) making
- Documentary crews that have filmed here over the years, drawn by the same authenticity we’re describing
It’s a low-key, conversational close to the trip — a chance to see Cappadocia as the people who live here actually experience it, rather than as a backdrop.
Where to Stay
We’d suggest basing the whole itinerary at one of our two family-run boutique cave hotels in Göreme — both sit inside the same landscape you’ll be touring, but they offer quite different experiences:
Kısmet Cave House — a budget-friendly option set in a genuine old village house, located within the Göreme UNESCO World Heritage Site itself. This is Cappadocia at its most authentic: original cave rooms, narrow stone streets right outside the door, and the same setting that earned the region its UNESCO listing.
Kısmet Cave Mansion — our newer, more modern property, restored from what was once an old village storage building carved into the rock. We converted it into a boutique hotel ourselves, keeping the cave architecture while adding a more contemporary, comfortable design — a good fit for guests who want the cave-hotel experience with a higher level of finish.
Either way, you’re staying with the same family running the tours you’ll be on.

A Personal Note from Jane at To Travel Too
I’ve already told you about my balloon ride panic, so you know I’m not one to gloss over the truth. So let me be honest about this too: when people ask me what made Cappadocia so special, my answer always surprises them a little. It wasn’t just the balloons.
It was Faruk.
We stayed at Kismet Cave House, and from the moment we arrived, it felt less like checking into a hotel and more like being welcomed into a family home that happened to be carved into the side of a mountain. Every morning, we climbed up to the rooftop terrace with a coffee in hand and watched the sky fill with colour as dozens of balloons rose over the valley at sunrise. I never once got tired of that view, and I never will.
Faruk took us out on his private vineyard tour, sharing the valleys and the history and the stories of his own Cappadocia with the kind of pride that only comes from someone who genuinely loves where he’s from. Somewhere in amongst the fairy chimneys and the cave churches, he also helped us track down a carpet for our son Rob — patiently, without any pressure, just genuine care that we found the right one to bring home. It’s in Rob’s living room now, and every time I see it, I think of that afternoon.
And the food. Faruk’s family cooked for us during our stay, proper home-style Turkish cooking, the kind you simply can’t order from a menu. I still think about it.
