Top Things To Do in the Hunter Valley
Popular Cellar Door Tastings
Tempus Two Chocolate and Wine Tasting Review
Sampling Tempus Two Wines with Cuvee Chocolates was a match made in heaven.
The tasting lasts around 30 minutes and you pair 4 Tempus Two wines with 4 delicious Cuvee chocolates.
Our first pairing was with the 2013 Pewter Pinot Chardonnay which went exceptionally well with the Blanc de Caramel (caramelised chocolate with sea salt). The honey flavour of the Pinot Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills was enhanced by the Blanc de Caramel.
Another delightful combination using Amphora Chocolate (65% dark chocolate) was with the Copper GSM made from Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre from the Barossa Valley.
Cuvee’s Bianco chocolate (35% white chocolate) was thoroughly enjoyed with the 2022 Copper Rose. At first, we thought darker chocolate would have suited the Rose but the match was perfect.
The Grand Cru (75% dark chocolate) was a favourite with the smoky 2018 Pewter Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coonawarra Region of South Australia.
We kept some of the Grand Cru Cuvee Chocolate in reserve to enjoy with the 2022 Copper Maestri a 14% medium-bodied red made from Lambrusco. The flavours of both did not disappoint.
You can book your Chocolate and Wine Tasting at Tempus Two here.
Tempus Two Uno & Museum Premium Tasting Review
As the name suggests this is a ‘lux’ tasting of 5 of Tempus Two Uno & Museum Wines. Duration of the tour is approximately 45 minutes.
The Hunter Valley is known for its Semillon and Tempus Two has 5 wonderful UNO Semillon which we compared their individual uniqueness of flavour through the years starting with 2016 and ending with 2004.
We learnt that Semillon does not have to be chilled to enjoy its flavour. Did we have a favourite – yes the 2004 vintage? A darker golden hue colour the Zenith Semillon we felt to be much smoother and richer than the others coming close to it was 2014 which was smooth as well as oaky.
The UNO Shiraz 2017 Pinot Noir was aged in French oak and produced a smooth and creamy texture, a very enjoyable easy-to-drink wine.
Tempus Two do make some great Shiraz and the 2017 and 2018 were both enjoyable.

McGuigan’s Wine Cheese & Chocolate Tasting Review
We were delighted to see that Cuvee Chocolates were also used in the McGuigans Wine Cheese and Chocolate Tasting. The cheese was from next door at the Hunter Valley Cheese Company.
We sampled Harrigan’s Vintage Cheddar cheese, 3-year-old mid-strength cheese that is made in the traditional style.
The 2018 Chardonnay paired very well with the Vintage Cheddar. The wine came from Tumbarumba and was aged for 5 months in new french oak barrels. The Chardonnay was a definite favourite.
The Branxton White Mould Brie was creamy and made also in a traditional manner.
Our favourite turned out to be the Hunter Gold Washed Rind which was delicious. A creamy taste and the edible rind was tasty and made in the northern “European Butter style”.
Our first tasting was the 2021 Cellar Select Vermentino which is a Gold Award-winning fruity wine with a hint of apple.
We progressed to the 2021 Chenin Blanc which spent 7 – 8 days fermenting in french oak barrels.
We could choose our wine from a large selection that was available. We were coming back in the afternoon to enjoy the Intimate Wine Tasting which does include most of the wines from the Wine Chocolate and Cheese Tasting. We left some of the reds for the afternoon.
We did have the opportunity of tasting the very smooth 2021 Pinot Noir from the Cellar Select range and the award-winning 2021 Mastercraft Tempranillo and 2021 Mastercraft Montepulciano which had a hint of blackcurrant and came from their Grand Junction Vineyard 50 km north of Mildura.
We finished on the 2021 Gold award-winning Cellar Select Carmenere which had hints of peppercorn and blackcurrant which would be a perfect accompaniment with lamb.

McGuigan’s Wine Intimate Tasting Review
Duration: approximately 45 minutes
The gold award-winning 2022 Mastercraft Pinot Grigio started our afternoon’s wine tasting followed by the 2021 Verdelho. Both refreshing and easy to drink.
If you are a member of McGuigan Wine Club your tasting includes the Personal Reserve wines. Every 3 months you will have 12 bottles sent to you of your choice at a 20% discount. We found the McGuigan Wines to be very reasonably priced. Included in your delivery is a mix of wines as well as their Premium wines, with cellar notes and a suggested recipe to go with each wine,
For details on how to join click here.
As we were hosted by McGuigans for both tastings we were fortunate to be able to enjoy the Personal Reserve wines that are reserved for members.
They included the 2019 Personal Reserve Shiraz which we paired with some of the Amphora chocolate from the morning’s tasting (which we held back as we knew we would be tasting some of the Personal Reserve). Other Shiraz’s that we enjoyed in the tasting were the:
2017 Vanessa Vale Shiraz – an award winning Shiraz
2010 Personal Reserve Shiraz
A firm favourite was the 2016 Philosophy Cabernet Shiraz.
If you are a Cabernet Sauvignon fan you can’t go past the 2019 Personal Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon that hails from Langhorne Creek next to the Barossa Valley.
We also had the opportunity of trying the 3 dessert and fortified wines:
- Botrytis Semillon
- Tawny Port
- Mastercraft Choc Coffee Cream (watch out Bailey’s you have a strong competitor here).

Towns to Visit
To visit the towns of Laguna, Wollombi and Broke take the Scenic Drive 33 from Sydney.
Laguna
Johanna Griggs from the Channel 7 Network in Australia states
“The sleepy Hunter Valley town of Laguna may look small but it’s hiding some seriously stylish accommodation, art shows and places to drink and eat – number 6 on Australian Traveller’s ‘100 amazing places you haven’t been to yet‘.
Laguna is the greatest getaway in the history of the world,” declares Joanna Griggs. Not that you might think so, at first glance – the sleepy town in the lower Hunter Valley has “only five or six buildings when you’re driving through,” she admits, but go looking “and you’ll uncover some real hidden gems.”
Wollombi
Wollombi has plenty of accommodation to suit all types of travellers and budgets. The small colonial country town has cafes, shops, a country pub, the Endeavour Museum, St Michael’s Church and St John’s Church.
Broke
Broke is well-known for its boutique wineries, accommodation and local dining establishments. explore the World Heritage wilderness and visit the ancient rock art on the Finchley Cultural Walk.
Conclusion
The Hunter Valley has so much to offer the visitor. It certainly is a destination that you can revisit many times and find something new and exciting to enjoy. There are many hidden gems, so take your time and don’t rush this beautiful region of NSW.
