Why Phuket is Perfect for Multi-Generational Travel

There is a growing trend for multi-generational travel globally.  In 2024, it was valued at around USD 360.2 billion and is expected to reach USD 696 billion by 2033, reflecting a significant shift toward shared experiences, reconnection, and memory-making across all ages.

Phuket is one of the best destinations in Asia for multi-generational travel.  Phuket is served by approximately 84 international routes to 37 countries across four continents, operated by 66 international carriers.

Jetstar Australia operates direct flights to Phuket from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Our family resides in the Sydney area, which makes Jetstar the best option for us, saving us a flight connection or stopover in Bangkok.  The flight time is approximately 9 hours.

Phuket has a lot to offer for family travel, from family-friendly resorts, safe swimmable beaches, activities for the under 4s, toddlers, teens, parents and grandparents, cultural activities, island hopping, cooking classes, health and wellness, markets, day trips and more.

For our family group, our requirements were:

  • safe and swimmable beach
  • large resort with lots of activities for all ages, e.g. kids club, water sports, spa treatments, markets and beach front restaurants and bars
  • pools
  • large rooms to accommodate the children
  • beachside restaurant to celebrate a 70th birthday

Why We Chose Angsana Laguna Phuket for our 7-night Multi-generational Travel

Living Room in the Laguna Premier rooms
Living Room

Fortunately, I had already visited Angsana Laguna a few years earlier at a travel conference and knew it would be the ideal venue. During my previous visit, I had also checked out a few of the major resorts around the Angsana Laguna Hotel on Bang Tao Beach and Kamala. Bang Tao Beach is perfect for family-friendly resorts.

Laguna Premier Bedroom and Bathroom
Laguna Premier Bedroom and Bathroom

Our choice of accommodation at Laguna was their Premier rooms at 45 sqm with lagoon or garden views.  There is a large sitting area where a cot and rollaway bed can be placed if you have up to two children travelling with you.  There is a balcony, a rain shower, coffee and tea-making facilities, a minibar, a safe, complimentary Wi-Fi, and toiletries.

Good to know: check out the packages that the Angsana Laguna has on offer regularly. Our package included one-way airport transfers, which we were able to book with car seats for the little ones. There were also discounts on dining and spa treatments.

Book your accommodation here

Recommendation: The Angsana Laguna complex is part of the Accor Hotel Chain and its membership programme, Accor Live Limitless, wherethe  benefits of membership include:

  • discounts on hotel rooms and meals and beverages
  • complimentary wi-fi
  • You can earn reward points not only on your accommodation bookings, but also on meals, activities and local excursions

Dining Options at the Angsana Laguna Phuket

There are many dining outlets at Angsana Laguna.

Alfresco dining at Market Place

Let’s start with breakfast taken at the Market Place. There are so many options available from their buffet to suit all tastes.

The children loved the children’s buffet area with the yummiest banana cake, doughnuts, and cereals and more yummy items.

For the adults, there were choices of Asian, Indian, Continental, Seafood, Pan-Asian, Thai, European and the egg station. Fruits were plentiful, coffee excellent and many choices of pastries available.

The busiest times are from 8.30 am onwards.

Opening hours: 6.30 am to 10.30 am.

Xana Beach Bar

Xana Beach Bar
Xana Beach Bar

We all loved Xana Beach Bar for lunch, with its location right on the beach.

Happy hour is between 5 and 6 pm – buy one, get one free.  There is a later happy hour for the night owls, 10 pm to 2 am, which unfortunately none of us made except for the first night, as we got to the hotel around 11 pm.

Azzurra Restaurant

Sunset at Azzurra Restaurant
Sunset at Azzurra Restaurant

We dined here twice during our stay. Azzura offers Italian cuisine – pastas, pizzas and regional dishes. The first night we dined upstairs with its stunning views over the ocean. Aim to arrive just before sunset to get those perfect Instagram sunset shots.

Azzurra was our chosen restaurant for the 70th birthday celebrations. I chose a beach table setup, which was perfect for the kids as they could play in the sand whilst we enjoyed a relaxed dinner.  You can choose various setup options for your special event! We decided to go with the à la carte option rather than the set menu.

Poolside Restaurant

This is well located next to the pools and the beach pool that the children loved. You could choose between dining in the restaurant or being delivered to your sun lounge. It is casual dining with snacks. light meals, drinks and cocktails.  There is even an icecream station for the big kids and of course the little ones.

Open from 10 am to 7 pm

Loy Krathong Bar

A great place to unwind for a cocktail before dinner.  The bar is open from 8 am to 2 am.

There are two other dining options which we did not try during our stay:

Bodega Grill.

Open 6.30 to 10.30 for breakfast and then for lunch and dinner from midday to 10.30 pm. Western cuisines, bbq, steaks and drinks – dress code smart casual.

Open for dinner from 6 pm to midnight. Local seafood dishes available.

Activities in and around Angsana Laguna Phuket

So what did we all do?

Angsana Spa
Angsana Spa

The girls hit the Angsana Spa for some downtime as well as workouts in the gym.

Watersports at Angsana Laguna

The boys loved sailing on the lagoon, enjoying a circuit on the paddle boats, the electric hydrofoil and workouts at the gym, even a yoga class or two.

The children were happy in the pools and on the beach.  Not once did they ask to go to the Kids Club!

Consider visiting Aquaria Phuket

To save time and skip the queues, book your Aquaria tickets in advance here

We organised a mini-bus for us all with three car seats to take us to Aquaria Phuket at Central Mall Phuket. It is the biggest aquarium in Thailand. This was my second visit here, and I knew the kids would love the mermaid show at 10.30. The show takes place on the lower level B1.

Hint: after the Mermaid show, wait a few more minutes.  One of the mermaids came out and gave a further show for a few minutes; this is when we managed to get better photos and videos, as the crowds had departed.

The feeding of the penguins and otters was fun. Upstairs there are snakes, lizards and more reptiles.

After your visit, head back into Central Mall for shopping at Tops Supermarket and lots of local street food, bakeries, fruit, etc.

Visiting Other Resorts in the Laguna Complex

There is a shuttle bus provided by the Laguna Complex that will take you to the other hotels, e.g. Cassia Hotel, Saii Laguna, Banyan Tree, Dusit Thani, etc.

There is also a shuttle boat that departs near the Poolside Restaurant that will also take you to other resorts, as well as Canal Village, which has shops and restaurants.  The little ones loved travelling around on the boat. There is no charge for the shuttle boats.

Check with the resort that you intend to visit; there may be a charge to use the pool, but not the restaurants.

Saturday Night Market at Laguna Grove

The shuttle bus will also drop you off at the Saturday Night Market at Laguna Grove, still within the Laguna complex. Here you can buy local street food, the kids can enjoy a jumping castle, and you can listen to local music entertainers whilst enjoying your meal.  You can pick up the return shuttle where it dropped you off, just let the security guard know where you are staying, as there are different routes of the buses. There is no charge for the shuttle bus.

Conclusion

Sunsets on Bang Tao Beach

Staying at Angsana Laguna Phuket proved to be the perfect choice for our multi-generational holiday because it genuinely balanced everyone’s needs without compromise. The expansive lagoon pools kept the little ones entertained for hours, the spacious rooms gave each family breathing space, and the beachfront setting meant relaxed mornings and sunset walks were effortless. Grandparents could unwind at the spa or enjoy peaceful corners of the resort, while parents had access to activities, dining options and island adventures just moments away. It wasn’t just a place to sleep — it was a resort where three generations could relax, reconnect and create shared memories with ease, making it an ideal base for family travel in Phuket.

10 Essential Multi-Generational Travel Tips for a Successful Family Trip

Multi-generational travel is becoming one of the fastest-growing trends in family vacations. Travelling with grandparents, parents and children creates unforgettable memories and allows families to reconnect through shared experiences.

However, planning a trip for different ages and interests requires thoughtful preparation. These multi-generational travel tips will help you plan a stress-free vacation that everyone can enjoy.

1. Choose a Destination That Works for All Ages

The best multi-generational travel destinations offer something for everyone. Look for places that combine relaxation, culture and activities suitable for different age groups.

Popular options include beach resorts, cruise holidays, and cities with good public transport and accessible attractions.

2. Include Everyone in the Planning

When planning a family trip with grandparents and children, involve everyone in the decision-making process. Ask family members what they would most like to do.

Creating a shared wish list ensures the itinerary reflects the interests of the entire group.

3. Book Accommodation with Plenty of Space

Comfort is key when travelling with multiple generations. Look for accommodation that allows families to spread out.

Great options include:

  1. Family Suites
  2. Serviced Apartments
  3. Villas or holiday homes
  4. Connecting hotel rooms
  •

Having shared spaces and private rooms makes the trip far more enjoyable.

4. Plan a Flexible Itinerary

One of the most important multi-generational travel tips is to avoid overscheduling.

Plan one or two major activities each day, leaving room for rest, spontaneous exploration or separate activities for different family members.

5. Balance Activities for Different Interests

A successful multi-generational vacation includes a mix of experiences.

Consider including:

    1. Cultural attractions and museums
    2. Nature walks or scenic tours
    3. Food experiences and cooking classes
    4.  Relaxation time at beaches or pools

This variety keeps travellers of all ages engaged.

6. Respect Different Energy Levels

Younger travellers may want adventure and excitement, while older family members may prefer a slower pace.

Schedule downtime and breaks throughout the day to keep everyone comfortable and happy.

7. Prioritise Accessibility and Convenience

When travelling with grandparents or younger children, accessibility matters.

Choose destinations with:

    1. Easy transport options
    2. attractions with seating and shade
    3. short walking distances
    4. guided tours or private drivers

Small adjustments can make travel much easier for everyone.

      8. Share the Planning Responsibilities

Planning a multi-generational family holiday can feel overwhelming if one person manages everything.

      Assign tasks such as:

          1. researching accommodation
          2. booking tours
          3. planning meals
          4. organising transportation

        Sharing responsibilities helps reduce stress.

        9. Capture the Special Moments

Multi-generational travel often marks important milestones for families. Capture those memories with photos, videos or a shared digital album.

These keepsakes will become treasured reminders of the experience.

        10. Focus on Time Together

At the heart of every successful multi-generational vacation is quality time spent together.

Whether it’s sharing a meal, exploring a new destination or simply relaxing by the pool, these moments create lasting family memories.

        Final Thought

Travelling across generations takes a little extra planning, but the rewards are incredible. With the right balance of activities, flexibility and shared experiences, multi-generational travel can become one of the most meaningful ways for families to explore the world together
