If you love walking a city the way we do, a free walking tour is one of the best ways to get your bearings and understand a place’s history in a few hours. In Porto, that means Porto Walkers — rated the #1 free walking tour on TripAdvisor, still run by a genuinely passionate crew of local guides.

Our Experience
Our tour departed from Praça da Liberdade — Porto’s grand Freedom Square — with our guide “V,” who turned out to be exactly the kind of storyteller that makes a free walking tour genuinely worth doing. The tour has since been confirmed directly by Porto Walkers themselves, who featured our visit on their own blog — a nice bit of validation that this wasn’t a one-off good day.

We hadn’t gone far before our first stop: the McDonald’s at Praça da Liberdade, and yes, that’s a genuine highlight. Originally the Imperial Café, this building was where Portugal’s dictatorship dined between 1930 and 1974, and it remains, by a wide margin, the most beautiful McDonald’s we’ve ever set foot in — ornate ceilings, chandeliers, and a slice of political history hiding behind a drive-thru menu.

From there, the tour wound through the city’s steep, hilly streets — genuinely steep, more than we’d expected — covering Porto’s history, its people, its port wine trade, and what’s changed in the city in recent years. One of our favourite moments came at a small park stop, where two locals sitting nearby stayed to listen to V’s storytelling and complimented him afterwards on his knowledge. That’s about as good an endorsement of a guide as you’ll ever see in the wild.
Over roughly three hours we covered a genuine cross-section of the city — squares, viewpoints, backstreets, and enough context on Porto’s port wine industry that you’ll never look at a bottle the same way again.
What’s Changed Since Our Visit
Departure times have shifted since we took the tour — Porto Walkers now runs multiple daily slots rather than a single fixed departure, with a popular morning tour currently running around 10:45 am alongside other time slots through the day. Check their current schedule when booking, as timing can vary by season.
The company has also expanded well beyond this single walking tour — they now run food and wine experiences too, including a half-day Douro Valley wine excursion, if you want to pair the walking tour with something more indulgent later in your trip.
Our Verdict

A Porto Walkers tour remains one of the best free things to do in the city. We’ve done more than 10 free walking tours around the world, and this one holds up well against all of them — genuine local knowledge, real enthusiasm, and a route that goes well beyond the obvious postcard stops.
Practical Tips
- Wear proper walking shoes — Porto’s hills are no joke, and this tour covers a lot of them.
- Bring water, especially if you’re doing this in the warmer months.
- Tip your guide — this is a free tour in name, but guides work on tips, so budget accordingly for what you felt the experience was worth.
- Book ahead — as the #1-rated free tour in the city, slots do fill.
- Look for the red umbrella — it’s how you’ll spot your guide at the meeting point.

The architecture in Porto is just gorgeous! You definitely were able to see a lot of it on your walking tour, including that fancy McDonald’s! 😀 It’s great that your guide was so knowledgeable and engaging as well. Excellent info on how to get around and where to stay as well.

Thank you for such a comprehensive post on Porto. I am still to visit Portugal, but as a wine lover and otherwise as well, it is a country and city that I would want to explore. I have always found walking tours to be fun, healthy, and definitely more quirky and informative than any other type of tour. So cool to read about the Lello bookstore. I wasn’t aware of its Harry Potter connection. And sorry that you missed out on it. I guess its a reason to revisit Porto.
Hi Raghav
