Steigenberger El Tahrir Hotel, Cairo: Our Honest Review

We chose the Steigenberger El Tahrir for one simple reason: it’s close enough to El Tahrir Square and the Egyptian Museum that we could wander over on foot, and close enough to the Nile that crossing over to the Cairo Tower felt like an easy afternoon rather than a taxi trip. Every review we’d read beforehand backed that decision up — rooms, restaurants, wifi, cleanliness, all consistently praised. Here’s how it actually held up.

Getting There: Our Airport Transfer

El Tahrir Square

 El Tahrir Square

We travelled through Egypt with Egyptian Edu Travel, and our airport transfer to the Steigenberger was part of that arrangement. It was, without exaggeration, the smoothest airport experience we’ve had anywhere — they meet you before customs, handle visas, money exchange, and SIM cards, and have you through and in the car with your bags collected in a genuinely short amount of time after a long flight from Bangkok.

Check-in itself was fast, and we were in our Superior City View Room not long after arriving.

The Room

Our Superior City View room gave us glimpses of El Tahrir Square and looked down over the pool — not a showstopper view, but a pleasant one. The decor leaned contemporary, warm blue tones running through the furniture.

The bed Steigenberger El Tahrir Hotel

The bed itself was genuinely comfortable, and the linen was a step up from what we’d expect at this price point.

The bathroom Steigenberger El Tahrir Hotel

The bathroom was spacious, with everything we needed for our 3-night stay in Cairo.

The desk area Steigenberger El Tahrir

We appreciated the spacious desk more than we expected to — useful for catching up on emails between full days of touring — and there were plenty of power sockets for charging everything.

The lounge chair in the corner was well-positioned for both the view and catching up on the news, and the mini bar was well-stocked, with complimentary water, tea, and coffee throughout our stay.

Facilities

The gym at Steigenberger El Tahrir Hotel

We didn’t have time to use the gym or spa, unfortunately — full days with Egyptian Edu Travel left little room for it, but both looked well-equipped if your schedule allows.

The pool became the natural gathering spot after a day of sightseeing — we had our first bottles of Sakara beer here, Egypt’s local favourite, and can recommend it. Two bars serve the hotel, one near the entrance and one poolside, plus a small gift shop and an ATM.

Security

With the conflict in Gaza ongoing during our visit, security was front of mind for us, as it was for every traveller we spoke with in Egypt. The hotel took it seriously — guards checked every vehicle on entry, bags were scanned at the main entrance, and there was a visible police presence a short distance down the road. We felt genuinely safe throughout our stay.

Food and Drink

Restaurant at Steigenberger El Tahrir Hotel

Breakfast was included in our rate, and the buffet delivered exactly what we’d expect from a 5-star property — a genuinely good mix of Egyptian and Western dishes. One honest note: the restaurant gets busy around 7am, which is exactly when most guests are heading out for full-day tours, so plan your timing if you want a relaxed start.

Dinner in the restaurant at Steigenberger El Tahrir Hotel

We ate in the hotel restaurant one evening — vegetarian pasta and a filling chicken wrap, both good, alongside more of that Sakara beer. Service dipped slightly at breakfast under the volume of group tours, but was consistently attentive in the evenings.

On our other evening, we went to the Intercontinental after visiting the Cairo Tower, specifically for the Nile views over dinner. Prices weren’t steep and the quality matched — if you’d rather not leave your own hotel some evenings, the Steigenberger’s menu won’t leave you disappointed either.

Would We Stay Again?

Yes, for the location — being able to walk to the Egyptian Museum and El Tahrir Square made a real difference to how we structured our days in Cairo, and the hotel delivered on comfort, security, and service throughout.

If we’re honest, though, next time we’d probably choose a Nile-view hotel like the Intercontinental instead — not because the Steigenberger did anything wrong, but because we’d want a different neighbourhood to explore on a return visit. That’s a “we’ve been before” preference more than a genuine criticism of this hotel.
